Despite scoring four runs against three Reds relievers in the top of the ninth, the Pirates dropped a 12-11 decision in front of 3,428 fans at Ed Smith Stadium. Marino Salas took the loss, giving up a game-tying double to Craig Tatum and a game-winning, pop-fly single to Scott Hatteberg that fell between third baseman Neil Walker and left fielder Jose Macias.
Macias had put the Pirates ahead with a sacrifice fly that capped their four-run uprising. Top prospect Steve Pearce homered for Pittsburgh in the seventh, giving the Pirates a short-lived 7-6 lead.
